Knowing Vodka - Private Bartender NYC

A few fun facts on the history of vodka from Private Bartender NYC.

- Originating in Eastern Europe, the word Vodka is a derivative of the Russian word “voda” meaning “water”

- Initially Russia produced three grades of Vodka or hot, they were plain, good, and boyar; Plain being the standard, good was an improved version, and boyar the highest quality

- Due to crude production methods, the earlier vodkas contained impurities. In order to mask these imperfections, distillers flavored their spirits with fruit, herbs, or spices

- Vodka’s popularity continued to grow through the 18th century. To meet the elevated demand lower grade products were distributed based largely on distilled potato mash.

Difference between a Private Bartender and Private Mixologist

Are there differences between bartenders and mixologists? Are there professional attributes that differentiate mixologists from bartenders?

Bartenders take enormous pride in making beautiful, well-crafted drinks fast and efficiently, all the while providing great service, telling jokes and stories, monitoring the sports scores, and filling drink orders. A private bartender is an individual with a passion for creating amazing experiences.

Mixologist take a more culinary approach to making drinks. Mixologists create interesting cocktails and have a command of spirits and flavor pairings. A mixologist knows why the cocktail is prepared with those ingredients. Mixologists expand the concept of what cocktails can be. Mixologists are artists with a passion for creating inspired flavor combinations.

Call Private Bartender NYC at (619) 990-5918 to book your private event today!

Today we’ll talk about the top 5 cocktails to serve at your Super Bowl Party

Coming in at number 1 we have the Moscow Mule. A Moscow mule is a cocktail made with 1.5 oz of your favorite vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice, garnished with a wedge of lime. If you really want to wow your guests, serve in a copper Moscow Mule mug

For those who like their cocktails with bourbon whiskey, or for those who just don't like vodka, a refreshing alternative is the Kentucky Mule. It's made exactly the same as the Moscow Mule but instead of 2 oz. of vodka, use 2 oz. of your favorite bourbon whiskey.

My personal favorite is making an Old Fashioned cocktail. The Old Fashioned is a cocktail made by muddling sugar with bitters, adding 2oz of whiskey, and a twist of orange rind. To wow your guest, serve in a tumbler-or Old Fashioned glass.

A Jalapeno Margarita is always a crowd pleaser! It’s made by combining your favorite tequila with triple sec, margarita mix, and lime. Add 2-3 slices of jalapeno, depending on how spicy you like it. Serve in a margarita glass with salt or no salt around the rim. Garnish with a lime.

Lastly, shots for your guest! These can be jello shots, kamikaze shots, or straight shots of your favorite alcohol. But you should make them fun and festive for the big game!

Tips for Ordering a Great Cocktail!

Wanted to discuss some basics to ordering an amazing cocktail. From the grade of liquor to some of the terms used in ordering. I’ll share some of my favorite recipes in future posts. This is all about the different grades of liquor and the best way to order your favorite beverage from a private bartender in NYC, New York, or NJ..

Well - This is the cheapest liquor. Typically harsh tasting when drank without a mixer. You can get away with using well liquor in mixed drinks but if you’re in the mood for a Martini, Manhattan, or drink on the rocks, I’d go with Call or Premium liquor

Call - Medium price liquor. Examples: Absolut or Jack Daniels

Premium - Most expensive or top shelf liquor. Examples: Patron, Grey Goose, Kettle One

Cordial - Sweet liquor, 32-37% sugar Examples: Sambuca, Bailey’s, Kahlua

Up or Straight Up - Drink that is chilled or strained. Example: Martini or Manhattan

Neat - Pour straight from the bottle to the glass. Example: Whiskey (room temp)

Apertif - Before dinner drink. Example: Gin or vodka martini
